Common Questions:
Would they pull smoke out of a room?
You would need to put a vent or extractor fan in the ceiling to allow it into the roof. The whirlybird will then allow that smoke to extract out of the roof space. You can even duct them from the ceiling vent through to the whirlybird if required.
What if there is a strong downpour of rain, wouldn’t the rainwater enter inside?
No, unless an incompetent person installed it and not a professional. They have been installed throughout Queensland for the last 100 years. If they leaked, there would be a lot of soggy ceilings. Rain water is unable to gain entry into the roof cavity thanks to the spinning motion and centrifugal forces acting upon its turbine. When there is no wind and the turbine is immobile, rain water just runs down the outside of the turbine fins.
Do they really make a difference?
General rule of thumb is 35% of the heat inside your home enters through the roof. Having a whirlybird installed allows the hot air trapped within the roof cavity to escape. Just how effective a whirlybird would be for your particular style of house or commercial premises is very much dependent on what is actually causing the build up of heat in your home and also the type of roof and building style. This is why you should have our roof ventilation installers come out to your home or business to provide expert advice on the best type of ventilation for you.
On what part of the roof are they installed?
They’re normally positioned on the very top of a roof along the highest ridge line. This allows the roof ventilator to work most effectively, as hot air and moisture rises and accumulates at the highest point of the roof, where it can escape through the whirlybird and into the atmosphere.
What if I have a problematic part of the house I need to vent?
For particularly problematic parts of your house or business which require ventilation, you can install a whirlybird on the roof directly above this part of the house.
